Language Placement

Measuring Ability for Registration Purposes

The Language Placement Test ensures that students will enroll in the course that best suits their level of ability and that students share similar knowledge in any given language course. It therefore helps make language classes an enjoyable experience for both the student and the  instructor.

Students who intend to enroll in an Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, French, or Spanish course at the first or second year level at the University of Utah, and who have previously studied the same language elsewhere (in high school or at another university or college), must first complete the Language Placement Test. Those students who have never studied the language before may be enrolled in any first semester section of a language class without taking the exam.

The basic process for taking the language placement test is the following:

  1. Go to the Room 1400 of Language and Communications (LNCO) building. This facility is open during normal business hours. You don't need to make an appointment, but you must arrive early enough to finish your exam before closing. You may also call 801-581-7561 to make an appointment in advance.
  2. Once there you will need to pay $20 (cash or check only) and present your University of Utah ID card (no other form of identification is acceptable).
  3. You will then be seated at a computer where you will take the exam.
  4. Your test results will then be emailed to your Umail account, and can take up to two weeks to arrive. (The test can only be taken once per semester.)
